Hema Malini: I feel conscious when I say ‘Nahin!’

The Dream Girl says mimicry artistes have made her take a second look at her own accent
Hema Malini is one of the few female actors whose ‘distinctive’ accent has made mimicry artistes’ jobs much easier. How many times have you heard people imitating her iconic line from Sholay - ‘Chal Dhanno! Aaj tumhari Basanti ki izzat ka sawaal hai!‘? Says Hema, “In a way it’s good to know that the character (Basanti) is still popular after so many years.” But this kind of flattery is not always a good thing. Especially when another one of her lines, or should we say ‘word’, becomes the cause for fun. Ever wondered how many heroines of the ’70s have screamed ‘Nahin!’ (No) onscreen? But Hema’s remains the most easily recognisable one, and it is not surprising that comic artistes even today imitate her inimitable intonation of ‘Nahin!’ She admits, “I have seen these people on television shows. Now, I feel very conscious when I have to say ‘nahin‘ in any shot.” Forget ‘nahin‘ Hema, just say yes to more films and we’ll be more than happy. Right guys?
